Brexit: some immigration myths busted

1 June 2017 | Jonathan Martin

EEA nationals will lose their passports for months whilst making applications (for example, for permanent residence).

Not the case.  There is a passport return service which means passports can be taken to participating local authorities to be verified and copied and the copy sent to the Home Office.

All EEA citizens require Comprehensive Sickness Insurance and if they do not have it they will be refused entry to the UK.  This is the start of increased obstacles to freedom of movement for EEA nationals running up to Brexit itself.

This isn’t true.  EEA nationals retain the same rights of entry to the UK as before the referendum.  Only students and other self-sufficient people are required to obtain the insurance.

The costs of applications have increased.

EEA national applications for permanent residence still cost £65.
