David Widdowson, an Employment partner at Abbiss Cadres, has given evidence to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy select committee inquiry into the Future World Of Work.
The select committee session involved a discussion into the changing nature of work, and the status and rights of workers in the UK in non-traditional employment roles. With the rise of the so-called “gig economy” and the growth of self-employment in the UK workplace, this is a hot topic for employers and government alike.
David Widdowson outlined the three-tier structure of employment relationships with ‘employees’ at the top, who have the most rights, the intermediate category of ‘worker’ who have some rights, and the self-employed who have the fewest statutory rights. David spoke about the political and legal implications of changing the current structure – as well as the opportunity to consider more radical reform once the UK leaves the EU.
